What is smart garden irrigation?

Smart garden irrigation means that your garden is automatically supplied with water. And exactly when it's needed. With an irrigation system, you avoid constant watering, lugging heavy jugs, or guessing whether the plants have enough water.
Sensors, weather data, and schedules control your smart garden irrigation in a targeted and efficient manner. This not only saves you time, water, and money but also ensures healthy plants and green lawns.

With Shelly, you control everything conveniently via the app, adjust settings, and have everything under control. So your garden is always well maintained without you having to worry about it.

Irrigation control options

You can control your irrigation in various ways:

  1. Fixed watering times
The simplest solution is to set fixed times at which the watering starts automatically. Mornings and evenings are ideal, as the water doesn't evaporate so quickly.

  2. Humidity sensor
A soil moisture sensor measures how much water is still available. If the soil is dry, watering starts automatically. If it is still damp, it stops.

  3. Use weather data
The weather report helps you to organize watering more efficiently. A system with access to weather data can suspend watering if rain is expected.

  4. Own weather station
A dedicated weather station enables even more precise control. It measures temperature, humidity, and precipitation directly on site and adapts your watering schedule optimally to the current conditions.

Smart irrigation control with Shelly

With Shelly 1 Gen3 or Shelly Pro 3, you can automate your irrigation. The Shelly 1 Gen3 is installed directly on the irrigation system. If the control system runs via a distribution cabinet, the Shelly Pro 3 is mounted on a top-hat rail. This means that the Pro 3 is not installed directly on the irrigation system. You can use the Pro 3 to control up to three areas, e.g. lighting, pond pumps, and irrigation.  Important: Installation must be carried out by a specialist. You can find an expert using the Installer Finder

A schedule can be set via the Shelly app using a scene: You determine fixed times at which your plants are watered automatically.
It gets even smarter with an external moisture sensor and an add-on (an additional extension with further functions). With the external moisture sensor, you determine the threshold value for when the soil is too dry. If this value is reached, the system automatically starts watering based on a previously defined scene.

The Shelly app can also call up weather forecasts. If rain is expected, the irrigation pauses automatically to save water. For even more precise data, you can integrate your weather station into the system.

Advantages of smart garden irrigation

- Automating garden maintenance
Your garden always gets the right amount of water - completely automatically. This prevents waterlogging or dry beds without you having to worry.

- Efficient  consumption

Sensors or weather data control the irrigation in a targeted manner. This saves water and reduces your costs.

- More time
No more manual watering. Your garden takes care of itself while you have more time for other things.

- Flexible expansion at any time
With Shelly, you can expand your system at any time. Add humidity sensors, weather stations, or additional irrigation zones.

Set up smart irrigation control in the Shelly app

With the Shelly app, you define how your irrigation system is automated by scene.

  1. Schedule: Set fixed times at which watering starts automatically.
  2. Moisture sensors: They measure the soil moisture and only activate watering when the soil is dry. For this, you need the Shelly Plus add-on with an external moisture sensor.
  3. Weather data: If you want to include rain forecasts, use the premium feature of the Shelly app or an external weather station.

You can also create scenes that combine different conditions:

Schedule + humidity sensor:
Irrigation starts at certain times, but only when the soil is dry.

Or:
Humidity sensor + weather data
Irrigation only starts when the soil is dry, but is stopped when rain is forecast

What types of garden irrigation are possible

Drip irrigation
This method is ideal for beds, raised beds, and planters. The water drips slowly directly onto the roots - efficient and water-saving.

Sprinkler
Ideal for lawns and larger areas: Sprinklers distribute water over a large area in fine droplets. There are above-ground sprinklers, which are connected via a garden hose, and underground pop-up sprinklers, which are embedded in the ground and extend when required.

Beaded hoses
Bead hoses are a mixture of drip and surface irrigation. They deliver water over their entire length - great for hedges and long beds.
With Shelly, you can control each of these methods perfectly and keep your garden in top form!

FAQs:

What does smart garden irrigation cost?

The costs vary depending on the system. Smart controllers such as Shelly 1 Gen3 cost around 16 euros. Sensors and irrigation valves as well as the premium feature of the Shelly app increase the price.

Does an irrigation system make sense in the garden?

Yes, because it helps garden owners save water and time while keeping their lawns and plants healthy and fit.

Can you control the garden irrigation via WLAN?

Yes, with a Shelly 1 Gen3 or Shelly Pro 3 you can control your irrigation system via Wi-Fi or by voice command via the Shelly app - from anywhere.

Is it possible to make watering the garden dependent on the weather?

Yes, with the Shelly App Premium or an external weather station, watering pauses automatically in the event of rain or low humidity. This means watering is only carried out when necessary.
