Which Shelly devices are best for saving energy?

Heating costs are among the largest items at home, especially in autumn and winter. Smart tech lets you run your heating more efficiently, without losing comfort. With Shelly you can control radiators, underfloor heating or even electric heaters automatically, which can lead to substantial savings.

To save even more energy, combine several Shelly devices. You’ll create an intelligent heating control that reacts to temperature, open windows or even weather forecasts. Your home runs as energy-efficiently as possible.

  • Save heating costs – radiator with digital Shelly BLU TRV thermostat; smart-home radiator thermostat for precise temperature control

    1. Thermostats

The classic radiator valve is out: with Shelly BLU TRV you make your radiator smart. The smart-home radiator thermostat measures temperature directly at the valve and regulates it precisely to the setpoint. Simply replace the existing valve.

  • BLU H&T device for smart heating control that monitors temperature and humidity and helps to reduce heating costs efficiently

    2. Sensor for temperature and humidity

Combine the BLU TRV with Shelly BLU H&T ZB or H&T Gen3. These sensors measure room temperature and humidity. Place the H&T in the middle of the room, not directly at the radiator. With a simple heating control via app(if-then automation) you definebehavior: below 20 °C the BLU TRV heats automatically; above 23 °C the heating switches off.

  • Save heating costs – Shelly BLU sensor on a glass door measures temperature and humidity for heating control via app

    3. Sensor for doors and windows

You can reduce heating costs even more by using the Shelly BLU Door/Window sensor. It detects when a window or door is opened or tilted. While airing, the heating switches off automatically and, after airing, it switches back on–according to the scene you set up. Save heating costs – Shelly BLU sensor on a glass door measures temperature and humidity for heating control via app.

  • Save heating costs – man configures a scene in the Shelly app to cut heating costs and control energy smartly

    4. Add-on for weather-based energy optimization

You can control heating costs using weather forecasts. One way is via a script. If you use Shelly Pro 3EM together with the Shelly Pro 3EM Add-on, the 3EM can take the actions defined in your script as soon as it receives real-time weather data. If a sunny day is forecast, for example, the add-on can switch the heating off so rooms don’t overheat. Even easier: use weather-based scenes in the Premium App features.

Save energy with underfloor heating

Underfloor heating can also be operated more efficiently with Shelly products:

If installation allows, use the Shelly BLU TRV as an actuator for the underfloor-heating circuit valves. Alternatively, Shelly 1 Gen3 can act as the actuator for the underfloor-heating manifold. The BLU H&T ZB sensor provides the room temperature and humidity; with this data Shelly 1 Gen3 increases heat output when the room is too cold.

The right heating temperature

On average, your home should be around 20 °C. The ideal temperature range varies by room. With smart-home devices you set the right value for each room. Guideline values:

  • Living room: around 20 °C is pleasant for most; some prefer 1–2 °C warmer

  • Bedroom: 17–18 °C is ideal for good sleep

  • Bathroom: around 22 °C so you don’t freeze after a shower

  • Kitchen: 18 °C is often enough; oven and stove add heat

Optimise electric heaters with Smart Home

Electric heaters (night storage, infrared, fan heaters) can quickly become cost drivers. Smart Shelly solutions help:

  • For plug-in electric heaters (e.g., night storage or direct heaters), use Shelly Plug S Gen3. Control the heater remotely, by schedules, or according to the room temperature
  • Shelly BLU TRV fits devices where a valve can be replaced – e.g., radiators with an electric boiler/water circuit. The smart thermostat measures temperature and adjusts to setpoints so the heater runs only when needed.
  • For night storage heaters, smart control is especially valuable: plan the storage charge to match the next day’s demand, avoiding overcharge and unnecessary costs.

Save energy and increase living comfort

More comfort with lower energy use – yes, it works. With Smart Home you can balance savings and comfort perfectly.

Automation means you don’t need to constantly adjust temperatures to save a few euros. With the right settings, the system adapts to your daily routine and the weather. Smart schedules, scenes and presence detection ensure each room is pleasantly warm at the right time.

Shelly Wall Displays are practical, too. Keep the phone in your pocket – one tap on the wall panel sets, for example, your preferred bathroom temperature. Options include the compact Shelly Wall Display, the larger Wall Display X2i (6.95-inch color display) and the Wall Display XL. They differ in size but offer the same functions.

Finally, the Shelly Smart Control app shows you at any time how much energy your heating uses so you can optimize your heating behavior step by step, without losing comfort.

With the Wall Display XL, you have easy access to the smart home and all information at a glance

Ventilate properly with Shelly

Ventilation is important to prevent mold. But leaving the heating on while airing wastes energy, and permanently tilted windows let warmth escape.

With the Shelly BLU Door/Window sensor that won’t happen: as soon as a window or door is open, the heating switches off. When you close it, the heating turns on again automatically. This lets you air rooms regularly without manual adjustments.

Use more energy from your photovoltaic system and battery storage

If you own a photovoltaic system, Shelly products help boost self-consumption. In the app’s energy management you can route solar surplus to your own use – e.g., hot water, a heat pump or your electric heater, instead of feeding it into the grid.

With a battery storage system it becomes even more efficient: energy stored during the day heats your home in the evening. Intelligent load management runs devices such as the washing machine or dishwasher during sunshine and switches them off later so stored power goes primarily to heating.

Advanced systems use weather forecasts for planning. If rain is forecast for tomorrow, the battery is fully charged today so that the heat pump or electric heater can run from stored power under cloudy skies.

What savings potential exists?

Smart heating control can significantly reduce heating costs and energy use, depending on previous heating behavior and the technologies you use. Savings are greatest if you haven’t optimized demand yet; if you already manage heating very consciously, savings will be smaller.

Example: A two-person household uses 2000 kWh of heating energy per year. With smart control, savings of 200–600 kWh are realistic. At an average price of €0.27 per kilowatt hour, that equals €54–€162 per year. Combined with a photovoltaic system, you can save even more by using your own solar power for heating and hot water

FAQs: Saving heating costs made easy

Can you save energy with smart home?

Yes. With Smart Home Shelly you can adjust heating via app or automations and save up to 30% heating energy.

Are smart plugs power guzzlers?

No. Smart plugs draw very little power, usually well under 1 W. Compared to the savings from automation and metering, the extra consumption is minimal.

Can smart thermostats save money?

A smart thermostat can save up to 30% on heating costs. It lowers temperature when you’re away and switches the heating off automatically while airing.

How can I optimize my energy use?

Combine smart devices – e.g., temperature and presence sensors plus a thermostat for radiator control – for the biggest savings.
