Control outdoor light with twilight sensor

A twilight sensor measures the ambient brightness and automatically controls the outdoor lighting. If the light falls below a certain brightness level, the sensor switches the lamp on. When it gets brighter again, it switches it off again. This brightness sensor can control Shelly devices directly via URL actions or scenes, for example as a twilight switch for your outdoor lighting.

Shelly Plus add-on with LDR

In combination with a photoresistor, this add-on measures the ambient brightness and can control light sources automatically.

Shelly BLU Door/Window Sensor

This door and window sensor has a light sensor and can be used to detect brightness.

Shelly BLU Motion

This motion detector can also measure ambient light.

There are various options for controlling the light itself, depending on whether you want to control the lighting smartly via app, dim the light, regulate the light color or connect a light chain.

Shelly BLU Motion: motion detector and LUX sensor in one

Why have two devices when one offers the perfect solution? With the Shelly BLU Motion, you don't need a separate twilight sensor or an extra motion detector - it can do both!

Its LUX sensor measures the ambient brightness and adjusts the light output. You can do this by simply defining the corresponding scene in the app. The motion sensor recognises whether someone is nearby.

  • Bright enough? Then the light stays off.
  • Dark, but no movement? No unnecessary switching on.
  • Dark + movement? Light switches on automatically!

This means that your outdoor lighting does not simply switch on when it is dark, but only when someone is actually approaching. For example: Your outdoor wall light only switches on at night when you walk past - and stays off when nobody is there. Important: When installing, make sure that the housings of all devices in which you install Shelly products are waterproof.

Step by step:How to attach the Shelly BLU Motion

  • Prepare device
Insert the batteries and add the sensor in the Shelly Smart Control app.
  • Select installation location
Indoors or in a sheltered outdoor area - for example under an eaves, as the Shelly BLU Motion is not weatherproof.
  • Use motion & light sensor
The LUX sensor measures the brightness. Set up a scene: "If movement is detected AND it is dark, switch on the outdoor light".
  • Make fine adjustments
Set a delay after which the light switches off automatically. If your light is dimmable, you can also adjust the brightness to create a pleasant lighting mood.
  • Test & optimize
Check the motion detection, adjust the detection angle or the light sensitivity.

Control with separate twilight sensor: these are the advantages

With a separate twilight sensor, you are much more flexible than with an outdoor light with integrated twilight sensor. These are the reasons:

  • You can use any outdoor lamp, not just special models with a built-in sensor.
  • The sensor can be individually positioned to enable the best light measurement.
  • You can set the brightness value individually.
  • The lighting can be combined with other smart home devices such as motion detectors or timer schedules.
  • You can retrofit existing lamps without having to buy new ones.
  • With Shelly products, you can conveniently control your lighting via app, have remote access and can set up automations. This saves electricity and time.

Alternative:
Control outdoor light via Shelly ap

Instead of using a separate twilight sensor, you can control your outdoor lighting in the Shelly app using the sunrise and sunset function. To do this, you need the premium version of the app. This method does not use direct brightness measurement, but calculates the twilight using your location data. This is particularly practical if you don't want to install an additional sensor.

It's easy to set up: select your lamp in the Shelly app, go to the schedule settings, activate sunrise and sunset, set a delay if required and save the schedule. As soon as this is active, your outdoor lighting is automatically switched on and off at the right time.

Possible scenarios for outdoor lighting

With Shelly products, you can control your outdoor lighting smartly - and not just for the driveway and the path to the house!

  • Atmospheric patio lighting: The Shelly Outdoor Plug S Gen3 ensures that your fairy lights come on automatically at dusk - perfect for cosy evenings with atmospheric lighting.
  • Staging garden art: Set the scene for sculptures or plants with targeted light.
  • Safety light for pets: Gentle lighting for the garden as soon as your dog goes out at night. So he has a safe source of light.
  • Party mode: Activate lamps such as the Shelly Duo RGBW at dusk and set colourful accents.
  • "Bedtime light" for children: garden lighting that gently dims to make the transition to bedtime easier.

FAQs

What does a twilight sensor do?

A twilight sensor measures the ambient brightness and switches the light on automatically when it gets dark. When it gets brighter again, the light switches off. This saves energy and increases convenience.

How can you save electricity with outdoor lighting?

Use twilight sensors, motion detectors and smart Shelly devices. This means that the light only switches on in the dark and/or when there is movement. Time schedules or dimmable lamps also help to reduce consumption.

When should the outdoor lighting switch on and off?

It should switch on automatically in the dark or when there is movement. When it gets light again or when there is no more movement, it should switch off to save energy.

Which Shelly to control the outdoor lighting?

For example, use the Shelly 1 Gen3, Shelly 1PM Gen3 or Shelly Outdoor Plug S for switching. Shelly BLU Motion measures brightness and movement and enables intelligent light control in the dark.
