Smart smoke detectors for greater safety and convenience

Smart smoke alarms have the same main benefit as classic smoke alarms: They alert you loudly when they detect smoke in your house or flat. But there are even more features integrated into the smart home.

What are smart smoke alarms?

Smoke alarms raise the alarm in the event of a fire. If they detect smoke in the home, a red light flashes, and a loud alarm sounds immediately to warn all residents as quickly as possible. After all, every second counts in the event of a fire.

However, smart smoke alarms, such as the Shelly Plus Smoke Alarm, have even more safety features under the cover. This is because they are integrated into your smart home and also send a push notification to your smartphone if smoke develops. This means you are informed even when you are away and can take immediate action. You can also create smart scenarios that increase security.

How does a smart smoke detector work?

The Shelly Plus Smoke Alarm is an optical smoke alarm. This means that it works with light to detect smoke particles in the air. The advantage of optical smoke alarms is that they also detect smoldering fires. This is because there is often a lot of smoke, but less heat.

The smoke alarm has its siren and LED status indicators. The smart smoke alarm communicates wirelessly with the smart home system.

What happens in the event of a fire

In the event of an alarm, the smart smoke detector from Shelly emits a loud signal tone of up to 85 dB. Flashing LED status indicators on the detector itself also raise the alarm in case of fire. Since the Shelly smoke detector is equipped with WLAN and Bluetooth, it forwards the information to the smart home system, which then sends a notification to the Shelly app and triggers the programmed automation.

The advantages of networked smoke alarms

Smart smoke alarms offer several advantages over analog devices. These are evident both when you are away and when you are at home. Let's take a closer look at the most important differences.

Warning in case of absence

If the Shelly Plus Smoke Alarm detects smoke while you are out and about, it sends a notification to your smartphone and you can react immediately- for example, by informing neighbors or directly alerting the fire brigade. In comparison, an analog smoke detector would only beep and flash, but this would, of course, have little effect while you are away.

Smart scenarios for even more safety in the event of a fire

As smart smoke detectors from Shelly can communicate with the other components of your Shelly smart home, you can easily create additional scenarios via the app.

For example, you could set all smart lamps to light up at maximum brightness when a smoke alarm sounds. This way, the system immediately attracts attention and illuminates the escape routes. You could also set the alarm signal to sound via smart speakers such as Amazon Alexa devices, for example, to ensure that the warning really reaches the whole house.

Convenient maintenance thanks to app integration

Everyone knows it: a smoke alarm beeps because the battery is flat. But which one is it? The cheerful search game begins: We start in the hallway and listen. No, it's not that one. Off to the next room and wait for the signal. Tedious and annoying. Smart smoke detectors, on the other hand, also report via the app when the battery is running low. You can then see exactly which smoke alarm is about to run out of juice and can easily replace the battery. The Shelly Plus Smoke Alarm smoke alarms also have a service life of five years. In addition to the app, status displays on the detectors themselves also inform you when the battery needs to be replaced.

How should a smart smoke detector be installed?

A smoke detector belongs on the ceiling - whether smart or not. This is because smoke always rises upwards in the event of a fire. In rooms with sloping or pointed ceilings, the smoke detector should be installed 90 cm from the highest point of the ceiling to ensure that the alarm gives an early warning. If possible, the detector should be installed horizontally and preferably in the center of the room. The Shelly Plus Smoke works wirelessly and can therefore be flexibly and easily screwed to the ceiling. You can then easily integrate it into your smart home via the Shelly app.

Function test of the smart smoke detectors from Shelly

To ensure that smoke alarms work reliably, you should carry out regular function tests. With the Shelly Plus Smoke Alarm, you can trigger the test by pressing and holding the button on the smoke alarm itself for three seconds. The red LED then flashes three times and three short beeps sound. This allows you to conveniently test whether the smoke alarm is working properly and reliably warns you in the event of an emergency.
