A smart garage offers numerous advantages that you don't have with a simple remote control. A few examples:
- Save time: You can open your garage door so early that you can drive into the garage as soon as you have turned into the driveway.
- Not sure if your children have really closed the door after leaving the garage? With real-time monitoring, you can check the status of your garage door at any time and take action if necessary.
- Parcel delivery services usually come when you are at work. Wouldn't it be practical if you could open the garage door remotely with your mobile phone so that the parcel carrier can leave your parcel there safely and dry?
- Strangers have no business in your garage! You can link your garage door control unit with cameras, lighting or alarm systems to increase security.
Open the garage door with your mobile phone - the animation shows that door control via an app offers benefits such as time savings, greater security, and control as well as a storage option for deliveries.
To be able to open your garage door via your mobile phone, you need to integrate the door control unit into your smart home network. You can then conveniently control the garage door with the Shelly app - just like all other devices in the house that are also integrated into your smart home network.
A prerequisite for smart door control is that your garage door is electrically operated. If this is not the case for you, it should not be a problem: both up-and-over doors that open forwards and sectional doors that roll upwards can be retrofitted electrically.
Next, you need a wireless system that supports WLAN. This is connected to the door operator so that you can connect it to your mobile phone. We recommend the switch Shelly 1 Gen3 or the Shelly 2PM Gen3. They are connected to the push-button connection of the existing operator to enable smartphone control.
Important: You must have stable Wi-Fi reception in the garage. If the garage is too far away from the router and the signal is not sufficient, you can use a repeater to boost the signal.
Alternatively, you can also use the switches Shelly Pro 1 or Shelly Pro 2 PM. They work via a LAN connection and therefore guarantee a more stable connection than control via WLAN.
The Pro switches also offer even more professional lighting and device automation as well as enhanced security functions - so that nobody can get into your garage without your knowledge. The Shelly Pro Dual Cover/Shutter PM is even more secure: You can use it to set up your garage to close automatically after a certain time. The Shelly Pro 2PM offers additional functions such as power measurement and motor control. The devices are installed on the top-hat rail in the distribution cabinet.
Important: If you are not very familiar with electrics, it is better to leave the installation to a specialist. You can find a suitable tradesman using the installer search function on the Shelly website.
There are several ways to open and close your smart garage door. These are some of the options - simply choose the one that suits you best:
To open your smart garage door with the Shelly app, you must first install a Shelly switch on your garage door opener or behind the corresponding switch, for example, a Shelly 1 Gen3 or a Shelly 2PM Gen3. Now connect the Shelly switch to your Wi-Fi network and add it to the Shelly app. Once you have set everything up in the app, you can open or close your garage door simply by tapping the button in the Shelly app.
If you want to have your hands free, you can operate the door control with a voice command. To do this, you first need one of the Shelly switches mentioned above on the garage door opener or behind the corresponding switch, connect it to a Wi-Fi network, and set it up in the Shelly app. Now link the Shelly app to a voice assistant such as Alexa or Google Assistant and create a voice command, for example, "Alexa, open the garage door" or "Hey Google, close the garage door".
If you not only want to open your garage door with your smartphone but also switch on the light in the garage at the same time, you can install a Shelly 1 Mini Gen3 behind the light switch and connect it to the lamp circuit. Now you can use the Shelly app to remotely control both your garage door and the light. This is practical because you no longer have to get out of your car in the dark, but can see where you are going through the light. Plus: you avoid unintentionally bumping into unlit objects on the garage wall with the open car door.
You can integrate the Shelly at the light switch into your smart home system and create automation, for example, so that the light switches itself off after a certain time. It is even more convenient with the motion detector Shelly Blu Motion: The light switches on automatically via the sensor as soon as you drive into the garage or enter the garage to get into the car. You can set appropriate scenes for the motion detector.
If the smart retrofitting of your garage door is too complicated for you, you can also use the Bluetooth buttons BLU Button 1 or BLU Button Tough 1 as an inexpensive alternative to the classic remote control. You can set various scenes via the Shelly app, for example: a single click opens the garage, a double click closes it, and a long press stops the door. The BLU Button Tough 1 is shockproof, splashproof, and dustproof, which is ideal for outdoor use.
The cost of converting your garage door depends on whether you already have an electric door control unit or whether the garage door still has to be opened manually. If you have a manual opening system, you must first install a motor.
Next, you need to select which type of Shelly switch you want to connect to the garage door opener to make the door control smart. For example, you can choose between the Shelly 1 Gen3 or the Shelly 2PM Gen3. The prices for these are between around 18 and 25 euros.
Optionally, you can install additional sensors to increase convenience and functionality. For example, you can connect a reed switch sensor to the digital sensor of the Shelly Plus Add-on and use it to track the status of your garage door. This way, you always know whether it is open or closed and can react accordingly.
All in all, the cost of retrofitting your garage depends on how many functions you want to use. The basic equipment for a smart garage door opener is very affordable.
