Why does excess charging with the wallbox make sense?

Surplus charging with a wallbox is worthwhile: you use self-generated solar power directly to charge your electric car - this reduces electricity costs, increases your own consumption and makes you less dependent on the grid.

An external system, e.g. from Shelly, recognises when surplus solar power is available and gives the wallbox the signal to charge. The wallbox then automatically controls the charging power.

The electricity is not fed into the public grid, but used directly. This increases the proportion of self-consumption of the photovoltaic system, which is economically and ecologically advantageous. This is particularly worthwhile when electricity prices are rising. A smart solution for your wallet and the environment.

How does surplus charging work?

With surplus charging, you use the solar power that your home does not currently need to automatically charge your electric car using a wallbox and simple energy management system.

How much you save with surplus charging

Assuming your electric car requires 15 kWh per charging process.

Feed-in tariff: approx. 8 cents/kWh Grid electricity price: approx. 30 cent/kWh

Feed-in tariff:

If you feed 15 kWh into the grid, you get: 15 kWh × € 0.08 = € 1.20

Electricity price from the grid:

If you draw the same amount from the grid, you pay: 15 kWh × € 0.30 = € 4.50

Savings: 4.50 € - 1.20 € = 3.30 € per charging session

With 100 charging sessions per year, you save approx. 330 € - just by wallbox surplus charging.

Simply retrofit surplus charging with Shelly

To retrofit existing PV systems for surplus charging, first install a Shelly Pro 3EM or Pro 3EM CT63 .

These devices recognise when there is a PV surplus and control the wallbox via a scene. Two scenes are required for reliable operation: one to switch on when there is a surplus and a second to switch off when the surplus is no longer sufficient. The switching threshold value can be set individually.

Depending on the wallbox model, you use the following for control:

Important: The wallbox must start automatically when power is applied.

A specialist company should carry out the planning and installation.

This is how much PV surplus a solar system produces

A photovoltaic system with an output of 10 kWp generates an average of 9,000 to 12,000 kWh of electricity per year in Germany, depending on location and orientation. You usually only use 25 to 35 per cent of this directly in your household.

The rest, around 6,000 to 9,000 kWh per year, is surplus that is fed into the grid. You currently get around 8 cent/kWh for this. Electricity from the grid, on the other hand, costs at least 30 cent/kWh.

This reduces electricity costs, increases the efficiency of your solar system and improves your personal carbon footprint - sustainably and measurably.

FAQs:

What is solar charging?

With solar charging, you charge your electric car directly with the electricity generated by your photovoltaic system. This allows you to actively utilise solar energy, reduce electricity costs and protect the environment at the same time.

How can you use the surplus energy from the PV system?

You can use surplus solar energy to charge your electric car, heat water or for household appliances - completely automatically with a smart energy management system.

Can I charge my electric car when the sun is shining?

Yes - an intelligent control system recognises solar power and starts the charging process as soon as enough energy is available.

How can you make a wallbox smart?

The easiest way to make your wallbox smart is with a Shelly 1PM. It controls a contactor - a powerful switch - and starts charging automatically when there is sufficient PV surplus
